San Francisco

August 24, 2007

Started out at 7:30am!!! Doug is a bit anxious about driving to SF, not looking forward to the traffic. I am sure it will be just fine, and once we get to the campground it is in walking distance to the ferry and bus for the city.

Weather is great again, sunny and clear.

Got to the campground around noon with no problems. We did watch the traffic build up and were glad we were not in it.

Spent the afternoon relaxing and looking at all the tourist info the park has. Tomorrow we will take a guided tour. There are supposed to be about 8 people in a van, so should be a bit personal.

What a great tour. We were the only ones on the tour so got to see more. The guide did a large circle around the city taking us to all parts and over both the Bay bridge and the Golden Gate. Got to spend a couple of hours at Fisherman’s Warf and watched the sea lions.

He drove us through China town, the Italian section and Telegraph Hill. We though housing was high in our area – it is nothing compared to here. A one room studio apartment runs $1200, when you talk about two bedrooms you are getting up to $3000 a month. To purchase a row house you are looking and 3-6 million dollars.

He drove us to Knob Hill where the houses sell from $32 to $62 million!!! This is a very interesting city, but I am glad we live where we do! We also drove to Lombard St., the crooked street. Because of the height and angle we did not walk it.

Drove into SF early so we could drive Lombard St. without much traffic. The angle of the street is amazing and I don’t know why anyone would want to live there. It was like coming down a roller coaster and I was glad when we got to the bottom!!!

We also drove over the Golden Gate and walked part of it. It was rather foggy, usual for mornings here. The afternoons clear up and are lovely.

We tried to get to Golden Gate Park, but never did find the entrance, will try another day.

Today we went to the Jelly Belly factory and Budweiser. We enjoyed the Jelly Belly very much and of course had to buy some of the goodies!!! The Budweiser was OK, but we did not see as much as we would have liked to.

Tomorrow we take the ferry to SF and then a ferry to Alcatraz. That should be very interesting and the ferry should be fun.
