Custer State Park, SD

June 1st - We stayed the night at the same RV Park we were in last time we were here. It is called Horse Thief and is nestled in the woods and mountains. We both felt it was like we were just here, we are even in the same spot!! Finally get to Custer Park today. Will fill you in later.

Well, our first day here and we are really glad we came. Checked into our camp site and then went up to the office to see what our responsibilities would be. There is quite a large manual for us to read. We were given a great reception and made to feel wanted.

Started reading the manual this afternoon.. After dinner we went for a short ride and were delighted to see buffalo and a lot of deer. They just don’t pay any attention to people. We stopped the car to take some pics and the just kept right on eating!! The weather was bright any sunny in the morning, but as the day progressed the storms came in and brought cold temperatures. We had to put the heat on in the car on our way back from our ride tonight.

The big drawback is we do not get phone reception or wifi. We have to go up the road to one of the lodges. So, I will try and get this updated as often as I can. Doug is feeling better from his cold, and I an now fighting it. Have been taking Zicam like crazy!!!

June 2nd - 5th - It was rainy and cold for the first three days we were here. Reminded us of NY and PA, cold and nasty!!! Yesterday the sun came out and it was clear and cool. Used these few days to stock up of our needs. We like the little town of Custer. The people are really friendly and they have a nice grocery store that has most things we will need. Went in to Rapid City to Wal-Mart to get the things we couldn’t get locally.

Last night it was so nice we went for and evening ride and I was so glad we did. We were treated at two different locations with herds of buffalo with their babies walking slowly along and across the road. I got tons of pictures. We then found the ’beggin burrows’ and had fun feeding them saltines. They are the only wild life you are allowed to feed. They weren’t as hungry as usual as they had been eating from tourists all day!!!

Today I get a couple of hours training in the office and hopefully Doug will get some training for his gate job. He is feeling a bit negative so I hope he will change is thinking!! Tomorrow we start for real. I am looking forward to it.

I'm glad you're getting settled in. The weather will dry out for you, I'm sure. Enjoy the animals. Brad and I are doing well and Linda is enrolled in college now!!!
