September 25, 2008

Made it to the Great Sand Dunes National Park on Monday. It is a really nice park, dry camping of course, but the sites are very nice. They are large with trees and fire pits. Do miss not getting on the computer though!!!!

Went to a nature talk with one of the rangers. It was very interesting. While telling us how the sand dunes where formed, he said that by coincidence everything was just right to make it work. Then he said very quickly or there was a creator that did it and quickly went on to another topic! Have not done much rocking here, but the few that I have found are very nice.

Had hoped to see a bear – when I said that to my neighbor she looked at me like I was crazy!! They have bear warnings all over. We have seen other wild life though. The first morning we woke up and there were four dear at the front of the camper. Diamond was curious to see what we were looking at so jumped on the dash and was fascinated with what she saw.

We drove to a small town called Creede, about 70 miles from here, we were trying to get to Lake City so we could tell Don and Peggy that we were there, but it was just a little too far. We decided to take a trail they call the Bachelors Trail. It takes you out to the old mines. Started out and only got about a mile or two and Doug and I were so nervous we turned around. It was very narrow, steep and had loose gravel. We stopped to take a picture and Doug had a hard time getting going again, we kept sliding backwards!!! I think that is the only road I have ever told him to turn around on!!

Tomorrow we leave here and will try to get to Santa Fe, NM. Shidoni Bronze Foundry is there and we were told it is very interesting. They only pour on Sat. so we will be driving about 200 miles tomorrow.
