Arizona

September 25, 2007

Weather beautiful again today. Another cool night and sunny today. We spent some time driving around Williams and Route 66. There are some neat 50’s cars and a great old gas station. There are 50’ diners , and even have a small old western town recreated. It was fun remembering our old cars the times we spent at diners when we were younger.

We then went back to ‘my brook’ to dig around more. Unfortunately we did not find any great rocks, but I sure had fun playing in the water, Doug says I was like a kid in the water, spent about 3 hours there. He had some relaxing time reading.

Finally left Williams today. We really enjoyed that park. If anyone is going to be camping in Williams, AZ we recommend Railside RV Park on Rodeo Rd.

Drove about 75 miles to Meteor Crater RV park. Went to the crater, took a walking tour of about a mile around the crater. It is an amazing thing and the history of it was really interesting. As usual, they would not let me collect any rocks!!! We drove around the area a bit after and I found the best rock right in the driveway of the RV park!!! They have so much agate around here that it is crushed in the gravel!!!

Today we went to Walnut Canyon and saw some Indian cliff dwellings. The hike was about a miles, but there were 280 steps!!! We both say we are out of shape, which we are, but I thought we did OK getting up those steps!!

It was fascinating seeing how these people lived. I wondered how they got around as all the pictures of them show them in bare feet – it was hard enough with shoes on!!! We were both impressed with one of the signs that told about how they lived close together to support and help each other. How different our world would be today if we all felt that way!!!

Got home early and relaxed, I was going to go out in the desert to look for more rocks, but was worn out!!

We leave today for Holbrook. It is only about 65 miles away, but we will be close to the painted desert and petrified forest. Getting close to the balloon fiesta and home!!

The campground has a neat name “Root 66”, and I am sure in the 50’s it was great!!! Kind of run down now, but convenient so we will be here for three nights.

Got here about noon so decided to do the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest today as they are predicting rain tomorrow. It was not the bet day because it was overcast and the pictures did not show the wonderful color. However, it was a great day temperature wise. We had been here about 10 years ago but with my new interest in geology I looked at it with a different eye. It was so beautiful and fascinating.

I am hoping to do some hiking in the desert tomorrow and hopefully find some good stuff!!! We see petrified wood all over.
