We went to Alcatraz today. How interesting, I can’t imagine living in one of those small cells. We did not realized this had been a military fort during the Civil War. It is in very bad condition, but was a great tour to take, they have a personal cassette so you can go through it at your own pace.
Doug was having trouble walking the tour, so we did not do the whole thing, but we enjoyed what we did. The weather was fantastic and we could only imagine what it was like to look across the water at the SF skyline and know there was no way you could get there!!
We really enjoyed the ferry rides. It is amazing how cold it is on the ferry!!!!

Today they are having a ‘Save the air” promotion. This means that the ferry is free until 1pm and the buses and cable cares in SF are free all day! We are going to take advantage of this!!
Went into SF again by ferry. Unfortunately Doug was not feeling well again, so we just took the cable car round trip. It was really neat though, we went through the financial district, China Town and Knob Hill.
We also went to the Wells Fargo Museum along the route. It has two of the original stagecoaches that were used in the 1800’s.
Again, the weather was clear and war, except on the water where it was cold!!!

Taking the day easy, so we just went for a ride through the Golden Gate Federal Park. It was a fort during the Civil War and was upgraded during WWII. We were amazed at how well fortified it was, probably more so that the east coast!!!
We were so surprised (don’t know why) at the temperature change!! We were so warm before we left that we never gave thought that the temp would be so different. The temperature went 30 degrees lower as we drove up the highway. It was beautiful scenery.
I was also amazed at the hillside, now that I am interested in rocks, it really showed the volcanic activity in this area.
We leave tomorrow for Yoseminite.
