Rain and More Rain

July 19, 2007

Woke up to 47 degrees today!!! Sun is out and it looks like it will be a nice day to drive to Atlin Lake. It is a short ride, so should be an early day today.

Well, this was not one of our better days!!! We got to the Atlin Rd. and the plan had been to leave the RV at a gas station and drive in to the campground and see what it was like. Doug decided the road looked pretty good so we headed in. Four miles in it turned into gravel. There was supposed to be a private campground another four miles in so we decided to keep going. Got to that campground and it was closed!!!

It would be 8 miles out or 8 miles to the next government park. We decided to go forward!! It was a slow a rough ride and we both felt it was not the ‘wonderful’ view that we had read about, but hoped that the town of Atlin would make it worth while.
Got to the campground and set up, it was about 3pm so we decided that we would drive the 40 miles to Atling, look it over and then maybe go back tomorrow. The road got worse as we went along, fortunately we were in TT!! Got to Atlin and were VERY disappointed. It is an old mining town and they were supposed to have a nice museum with a great rock display. The museum wasn’t that bad, it had quite a bit of local history that was very interesting. However, the rock display consisted of about 8 rocks found locally!!!! There was also public panning so we asked for directions to it. We drove another VERY rough road for about a mile. The water was running so fast and so high it was impossible to do any panning.

We decided to drive back to camp and leave tomorrow. We got back to camp at 7pm!! It was a long difficult and disappointing day. We are very fortunate that we have had very few of them along the way.

It rained all night!! I was concerned about getting out of here, but Doug said it would be no problem. The road was worse today because of the rain, it looked like it had been bombed!! It took us 65 minutes to go the 16 miles to the main road!!! It has cleared up now and we are on the Alaska Hwy. again. I don’t know how far we will get, but I do know we won’t be on anymore dirt roads for a couple of days!!! The RV and TT are covered in mud!!!

Finally stopped at Watson Lake, YT. When we were here in May it was muddy, wet and snowy. Now it is muddy and wet!!! We will stock up on everything we need here before going on the Cassair Hwy. They say it is difficult to get supplies along that road and we figure to be on it for 4 or 5 days. Not that it is that long, it is just very slow going.
