The Fishing Village of Ninilchik

May 22, 2007

Boy was it windy last night. At one point the RV actually was rocking!! It is overcast and dreary today. Went to the library and did some research on panning for gold and how to determine what you have. Am not sure if what we have collected is gold or not. Will keep checking. Did not pan today as it was cold and windy.

Have not been able to get on line for a couple of days, so while at the Library I took advantage and did some work.

We will be staying here for at least another day, as we are waiting for mail from our daughter.

We went to a local hotel for lunch and when we came out Doug saw someone get out of their car, take a picture of our sign and then get back in a drive off!!! He is really enjoying the comments he gets with that thing!!!

As we were coming home tonight we saw our elusive moose!! Saw her the first day we were here and hadn’t seen her again until today. She is the only wild life we have seen since being in Palmer.

Hope tomorrow is warmer and not so windy so we can go panning again!!!

Well, we are on the road again. The last two days were rather cold and windy but it has cleared up now and we ar4e headed for Ninilchik. It is in the Kenai Peninsula. I spent most of yesterday morning changing park reservations and making plane reservations for when Chip is here.

We never gave a thought about this being a holiday weekend. It is a big one here as that is when most things officially open. We got the last spot available at our next location.

We are not sure why we decided to come to this area! Since neither of us is into fishing there is not a whole lot to do!!

The weather is rather dreary and rainy, lots of mud!!!

We drove to Homer today, 5/26. It is the furthest point on the Kenai Peninsula. The weather was dreary, but the day was well worth the trip. We learned so much about Allusion environmental conservation. There is a wonderful information center, the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitors Center that was most interesting. It had wonderful displays and information on what is being done to preserve the wildlife in the Aleutian Islands. Makes you appreciate all aspects of the environment.

This area is “crazy” about fishing!!! When we returned from Homer we went to the beach a watched the boats coming in from the day of fishing. There is quite an operation as they drag the boat trailers right to the water and the boats just run right to the trailer and are pulled out. It is one after the other. We could no help but think of our fishing friends back home!!!

I don’t eat fish, but I really would like Doug to have some ‘fresh’ fish while we are here. We tried today, he had some Fish and Chips at a restaurant on the Homer Spit, but it turned out to be the typical frozen kind.

The weather has really been dreary, but reminds us of New York and how it just does not stop your activities!!

We have been impressed with how important this holiday weekend is here. It is the start of their ‘season’ and they prepare for it well. There have been teams on the roads picking up trash for the last week. They have such a short season that every day counts!!!

There is no shortage of bald eagles here either. We saw a pair, male and female, on the beach eating the remains from a fish cleaning. Wish I’d had my camera
